Hazelden Center for Youth and Families (HCYF) Plymouth, MN

Since 1981, Hazelden Center for Youth and Families (HCYF) has helped thousands of young men and women, ages 14-25, find freedom from alcohol and other drugs and regain hope for healthier and more fulfilling lives. Situated on 15 serene, wooded acres along the north shore of Medicine Lake in Plymouth, Minnesota, HCYF provides the ideal setting to begin the journey to recovery.
Hazelden Center for Youth and Families HCYF invented modern alcohol and drug addiction treatment, and our success in substance abuse treatment is based on years of research and studying what works.
Hazelden Center for Youth and Families (HCYF) treat each adolescent who comes to us with respect, while providing a safe place in which to heal. HCYF’s addiction treatment philosophy is based on the recognition that addiction is a disease and that abstinence is the best way to manage the condition. They approach alcohol and drug rehab in a holistic way, working with mind, body and spirit as components of a healthy life.
Teen addiction treatment is delivered by a team of professionals representing many disciplines including nurses, physicians, psychologists and psychiatrists, substance abuse/addiction counselors, fitness and recreation specialists and spiritual care professionals.
HCYF specializes in giving youth a fresh start and the tools to become their best. Hazelden’s recovery programs are designed to meet the unique needs of each young person we serve. Our structured, yet nurturing, environment encourages personal growth and responsibility. This unique approach has led to our recognition as a national leader in addiction treatment for young people.
A thorough assessment and evaluation is an essential first step. Specially trained addiction professionals meet with clients to help sort through addiction and life issues. Family members are also interviewed to help gain insight into each young person’s life. After completing the assessment, the Hazelden care team recommends a personalized plan for recovery. This plan may include addiction treatment, if appropriate, or there may be a referral to another program that would better meet the young person’s needs.
Hazelden offers a wide range of treatment services specifically designed to address each person’s individual needs and help them step back on the path to achieving their potential as healthy, recovering individuals. Unlike other treatment programs that address co-occurring mental health disorders with one-time psychiatric appointments, Hazelden’s clinically integrated approach provides an ongoing, wrap-around system of care that addresses the intensity and complexity of each patient’s mental health issues in all aspects of his or her life.
Each client’s treatment plan is developed and administered by a multidisciplinary care team, including addiction counselors, family specialists, psychiatrists and psychologists, doctors, nurses, spiritual care professionals and recreational specialists. They know that addiction influences every aspect of a person’s life and our holistic approach ensures that no aspect is overlooked.
Eighty percent of young people in residential care at HCYF have a co-occurring mental health disorder such as anxiety or depression. If the co-occurring disorder is not treated along with the addiction, sobriety can be threatened. Hazelden’s mental health team of psychologists, psychiatrists, marriage and family therapists, and social workers work collaboratively to develop and guide the individualized course of treatment for each patient.
The length of treatment varies according to each client’s needs. Throughout primary treatment, the addiction treatment counselor keeps parents and professionals updated on the young person’s progress. Each client’s individualized treatment plan includes:
- Integrated care by licensed, expert professionals
- Group therapy, one-to-one counseling and positive peer interactions
- Complete mental health assessments with access to mental health professionals and therapy groups
- Individual assignments on treatment goals and the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous
- Daily education through professional lectures and bibliotherapy
- Academic progress through tutorial arrangements with the local school district
- Planned recreation and spiritual care opportunities
- Comprehensive continuing care planning to assure access to continuing care services and support in the home community
